Medical Professional Mutual Insurance Company Medical Professional Mutual Insurance Company ("ProMutual") originated as a joint underwriting association (JUA) that was created by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1975. In July 1992, the name of the JUA was changed to the Medical Malpractice Professional Insurance Association ("MMPIA"), to reflect the fact that the entity was no longer a joint underwriting association. Chapter 330 of the Acts of 1994 (the "Enabling Act") was signed into law on January 11, 1995, and converted the MMPIA "to a mutual insurance company to be known as the Medical Professional Mutual Insurance Company, which shall succeed to and assume all of the assets and liabilities of" the MMPIA. ProMutual is domiciled in Massachusetts and authorized to do business only in Massachusetts. ProMutual has a Best’s Rating of A- (Excellent).
ProSelect Insurance Company On January 2, 1996, ProMutual Group, Inc., a holding company owned by ProMutual, acquired the licenses of the Abington Mutual Insurance Company from the Massachusetts liquidator, in the form of a clean shell. The entity was subsequently converted to a stock company and named ProSelect Insurance Company ("ProSelect"). ProSelect is domiciled in Massachusetts and writes business in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia.
